Open letter to Barack Obama from Jello Biafra

Published all over the place, and here too. It is long but makes for some good reading.

Dear Mr. Obama,

Congratulations on your recent victory, and for helping build such a strong mandate for change. In that spirit, please do not forget the other aisle you need to reach across. All the relief and publicity for the middle class won’t do anything for the 40-100 million Americans who are starving, unemployed or just plain poor.

Christian Voice, there is “probably is no God” and Prop 8

without comments

probably-no-godA newly-launched bus advertisement paid for by the British Humanists which says there is ‘Probably no God’ has been reported to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) by a Christian group. Stephen Green of “Christian Voice” (a one-man, right-wing, Daily-Mail-reading Christian advocacy “group”) feels that the statement “there probably is no God” falls foul of the ASA’s requirement that adverts be truthful and accurate.

This is of course ridiculous, but it is not my point or what this post is about.

On November 4th, 2008 Californians voted in “Prop 8″ which overturned the rights of homosexuals in California to get married to one-another. Stephen GreenĀ  took this as an opportunity to have a pop at the Californian gay community, you see Stephen has a big problem with gays. In his unpleasant and spiteful “press release” he paints a picture of the streets of Californian cities being full of rampaging, violent homosexuals attacking old ladies, Christians, Blacks (we don’t call them “Blacks”, Stephen) and Hispanics while writing racist graffiti.

Stephen’s assumption that it was only homosexuals who were protesting speaks volumes to me about Stephen’s grasp of reality and warped world view (in the same way that only women can protest on gender issues and People of Colour can only protest about race issues, Stephen?). The idea that anything but a handful of protesters were being anything other than well behaved is as preposterous as the idea that God hates queers.

Stephen Green is, at best, a bigot, and at worst a very stupid bigot. Gay people don’t choose to be gay any more than straight people choose to be straight (when did you choose to be straight, Stephen?); being a Christian is, however, a choice, as is being a nasty spiteful bigot.

Stephen, I respect your right to believe in any nonsense you so choose, but don’t cherry-pick from your 2000-year-old text, carefully ignoring some parts while quoting others, in a cynical attempt to victimise members of a community who just want the same rights as other people.

Go crawl back uder your rock Stephen and stop wasting everyones time with this ASA bullshit. It pisses me of that anyone, including me, has to waste any time or thinking space with this man’s crap.
