Burning Man - Packing List

Thins is my attempt to write a packing list for the Burning Man Festival.

It is a work in progress, comments, questions and additions very welcome
post them on the bottom or email me.

Things to bring:

  • Your ticket! - or receipt or whatever if it is a collect-on-the-gate ticket.
  • A tent or RV or van - somewhere to sleep and keep your shit.
  • Sleeping bag - or something to sleep in/under.
  • Roll mat - or something to sleep on.
  • Shade - somewhere to hide from the sun that won’t blow away and kill someone when the wind gets up.
  • Hat - broad brimmed, loose on the head, light weight, with a chinstrap!
  • Bandanna - a big one, has a billion uses.
  • Food - enough for you for a week - I strongly urge you to bring dehydrated food, tinned food (ie very little fresh food because it will go bad very quickly and then what you going to do with it?), bagels last well, chips/crisps, nothing which will melt……
Some people don’t eat much all week; some can’t do without at least one “proper” meal a day; some people, like me, will happily survive on noodles and Redbull for a week.
(please, don’t bring steak, ice cream and freezer and generator……)
  • Water - enough for you, at least one-and-a-half US gallons per day, probably two including for cooking, can be bought from supermarkets in Reno, they are expecting you.
  • dust masks - several, or a good posh one.
  • ear plugs - if you wanna sleep at night.
  • sun block - big bottle.
  • moisturiser - a big bottle should do you.
  • lip balm - at least one, and another for when you loose the first one.
  • booze - to share.
  • head torch - vital.
  • spare batteries - vital.
  • blinkys - el-wire, flashing things, glow sticks.
  • a bike - you don’t want to be relying on other people’s bikes or the Google ones unless you have to.
  • a bike lock - people will borrow your bike.
  • caffeine - Redbull, Monster, coffee….
  • sandals or Crocks or whatever.
  • good shoes or boots or sneakers.
  • saline nasal spray - i am so glad i took this, find in supermarkets and drug stores.
  • toilet roll - why do you think?
  • baby wipes - a whole big box each - have a wash, use no water and burn the evidence.
  • feminine hygiene - even if your not expecting your period. And maybe your friend will get hers, she will really appreciate your forward thinking!
  • some warm clothes - it can get cold.
  • cool clothes - it can get very hot.
  • silly clothes / costumes - participate!
  • first aid kit
  • spare car keys - you do not want to be looking for a locksmith in Black Rock City.
  • camel back or similar.
  • a book to read.
  • a pen and pad - to leave notes for people.
  • marker pen / Sharpee - to make you mark.
  • sunglasses - and a spare pare.
  • penknife - handy
  • knife fork spoon plate bowl
  • a plastic cup - to carry about and drink from when your offered a free drink.
  • bin / trash sacks
  • bike tire repair kit
  • cooler - ice chest to put your beer and the ice you buy in.
  • condoms - maybe you will get lucky, maybe your friend will.
  • cooking stove - if your thinking of heating anything up.
  • work gloves - just one pair each.
  • some money - for the journey home.
  • normal clean clothes - for the journey home.
  • a full tank of gas when you arrive - don’t count on buying any for 200 miles on the way out

Things not to bring

  • money - not more than a few $$ for ice and a few more for the journey home.
  • feathers - MOOP.
  • glitter - MOOP.
  • plants - MOOP.
  • animals - not even a camel.

Burning Man - What was it like?

Ever since we left the UK for Burning Man people have not stopped asking us what it was like, and I have real trouble telling them.

It was not like anything I have ever been to before, nothing like a British festival, nothing like my Dad warned me (he had been told by a friend of marauding biker gangs, trouble, fighting and drugs).

It was not a whole lot like I expected either. Clearly it was very hot, very dusty, American; but is was so well organised, tight infrastructure , so clean (fifty-thousand people and i did not see one bit of litter, MOOP, and would have picked it up if i had) not so much as a piss on a toilet seat. But this does not describe it either.

They say describing Buring Man to somone who has not been there is next to impossible, this is both a little pretentious and kind of true - here is an attempt:

Burning Man is:
Madmax meets Alice In Wonderland meets Priscilla Queen of the Desert meets Las Vegas fireworks with Hunter S. Thompson commentating; 200 miles from Nowhere, the best bits of the best British festival (Shambala?) but with no punters, no crew, no burger vans, no shops or stalls or stages or bands, nothing. Nothing but Burners and nonsense and fun, an assault on all your senses, saleability and prejudices. In a word it is mental.

The Green Man:
The theme for Burning Man this year was the Green Man - nonsense. Sorry guys but there is nothing ever so slightly green about BM. I had expected to see lots of innovative ideas but I saw next to nothing. Sure there were a handful seemingly uncoordinated displays about (one or two were even good - like the graphical illustrations of consumption - but most of them were not so good and some very bad - especially the algae which ate greenhouse gases, if that is the answer then somone is asking the wrong question). I saw some truly gross examples of needless consumption (the diesel generators powering freezes to keep steak frozen is a good example, but there were so may others) not least of which was my being there; ten-thousand miles on a plane, I took an RV, did not even try to source bio-diesel, did not even offer a lift to anyone. What a hypocrite!

BRIBH:
The Black Rock Internationl Burners’ Hostel is a great place, dunno what we would have done without it - for a virgin Burner, with no local friends, coming from overseas; this is an amazing resource and I hope to be able to input into it next year.

Brit Camp:
a sub camp of BRIBH, Britcamp was also brilliant - Romer and JoJo did a great job but burnt themselves out in the process - next year we will be taking quite a bit of that load - We met so many great people there too.

Things I’ll be doing different next year:
For a start, no RV - even small American campers are massive and grossly unnecessary for the likes of me - I need somewhere to keep my stuff, sleep and heat water and very little more. We ate a lot less than we thought we would and drank a lot less alcohol too, but the gallon of drinking water per person per day was a defiantly a minimum. Should have had more dressing up clothes, and should have been a lot boulder with them than I was, should have had more el-wire and not accepted the gifts of glow sticks so readily.

Next Year:
next year half the Machynlleth valley is coming………..
