Stop calling it “climate change”
In Europe we have been calling it “climate change” for years because “global warming” sounds like a good thing to those who think their climate too cold. In the US they/we have continued to call it “global warming” because, on the whole, hotter summers are associated with fires and hurricanes and simply being more uncomfortable.
I have been feeling for a while that these two terms are just too dam nice, now I have been prompted by George Monbiot at the Age Of Stupid’s Indie Screenings. George said
Let’s stop calling it climate change, it’s far too mild. It’s like calling a foreign invasion ‘unwanted visitors’
and I could not agree more! After all, this is going to kill us all, change the world beyond recognition, we need to act urgently, now, there is no time to wait!
Politicians are busy arguing about 1% cuts here, 5% there, when what we need is something like 80% in 15 years, the name of the problem is about as big as its proposed solutions.
I propose adding a prefix to the term; “_____ climate change”. Examples might be “catastrophic climate change” or “devastating and imminent climate change” or “apocalyptic climate change”… but I’m not so good at these things, maybe you have a better idea?
